January 25 -27, 2025 - Day One plus One in Auckland, New Zealand


Our New Zealand Adventure began with an 11 day guided trip on the North Island followed by self-exploration of the South Island in a rented caravan. Although we left Saturday evening and the travel time, including layover, was 19 hours, we arrived in Auckland on Monday at 10 am, due to crossing International Date Line.

Biosecurity is a big issue here. Our boots were inspected at customs and we were lauded for having cleaned them.

The waterfront is a fusion of the industrial past and new pedestrian, people friendly walkways, bridges, and parks. This is Silo Park.


Our dinner featured delicious fresh caught snapper 


and a classic lamb cut with modern accompaniments.

Feb 26-March 2: To Arthur's Pass and Christchurch

  February 26, 2025 -  Drove to Te Anau, back through the tunnel.   Views this direction different and even more dramatic.  Missed the roadside stops we also missed on the way in.  Gas at Te Anau but then headed straight to Kingston on Lake Wakatipo south of Queenstow n.   Made a note to next time do some water activity on this Kawarau River flowing into Queenstown--such a beautiful gorge! Our Kingston Top 10 campsite provided free bikes, and after messing around with small helmets and flat tires, we rode out on the Around the Mountain bike trail. It was a climb and we made it to an old Scottish homestead before turning around and coasting downhill for 10 minutes until we were all the way down.  We were out of snacks so went to the one quicky mart in town and got huge ice creams around 5pm, that served to keep us full until a very late dinner.  Went to the end of town in the car to hike a short trail but it was very short and l...

Feb 3-4: Waterfalls and thermal features

After a day "off" in Auckland, we hit the road again in our van and headed tp Warier Falls, a beautiful forest hike. These little ferns were curled up on the sides of trees. Here they are on the side of the tree. A beautiful native plant bears these cool purple "ink berries."  Not for eating. The trail was quite rocky and steep and one of our new group members fell backwards onto Dirk and tore a bunch of skin off her arm.  Guide, Luke, bandaged it but it needed further attention later in the hotel room by doctor Dirk.   We hiked slowly with the injured patient the rest of the hike. Only made it to the observation platform and not the top, where one can frolic and look at the view. Our dinners were very delicious and elegant but grossly lacking in starch.  Usually just eat a big dessert to get the carbs. January 30-31: Cape Brett and Poor Knight's Island

Started out early from Paihia town to Cape Brett's trek via water taxi.  We did a moving landing onto a rock shelf and then ascended a steep trail to a retired lighthouse. From the top of the cape we had an amazing view of the headlands. It  was a hot and exposed hike of 3.5 miles that felt like more---trail often both very steep and very rough, with roots and big steps of mud or rock. The forested part was filled with tree ferns and other unknown plants. Of interest were these possum traps as part of the program to eliminate all invasive animals by 2050.  The possums are marsupials from Australia. The trap is a white plastic killer trap at the bottom of the tree and the red markers indicate the location of all the traps set in this area.
